It's World Autism Awareness Day

World Autism Awareness Day is an internationally recognized day on April 2 every year, encouraging Member States of the United Nations to take measures to raise awareness about people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) throughout the world.

It was designated by the United Nations General Assembly resolution "62/139. World Autism Awareness Day", passed in council on 1 November 2007, and adopted on 18 December 2007. It was proposed by the United Nations representative from Qatar, Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al-Missned, Consort of His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani, the Emir of the State of Qatar, and supported by all member states.

In the years since the State of Qatar launched the Global Autism Movement by leading the passage of the General Assembly Resolution A/RES/62/139 on " World Autism Awareness Day”, we have witnessed a dramatic increase in autism awareness worldwide. The passage of new autism and developmental disabilities resolution A/RES/67/82 on "Addressing the socioeconomic needs of individuals, families and societies affected by autism spectrum disorders (ASD) developmental disorders (DD) and associated disabilities", led by Bangladesh and other Member States at the United Nations General Assembly, and World Health Assembly, enjoyed an overwhelming support by the United Nations Member States, and was adopted by consensus. A WHO consultation report clearly articulates the opportunities and the technical feasibility of meeting the needs of our children and families, and the robust demonstration of political will to address the autism public health crisis among even the poorest countries in the world.
