Former Philippine President Duterte forced onto plane to The Hague after ICC arrest

Rodrigo Duterte, the former President of the Philippines, has been “forcibly taken” onto a plane headed for The Hague, his daughter said, after being taken into custody in Manila under an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC).

The ICC alleges Duterte committed crimes against humanity during his controversial war on drugs, which led to thousands of deaths. In a video filmed after his detention, Duterte claimed the arrest was illegal.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) is an intergovernmental organization and international tribunal seated in The Hague, Netherlands. It is the first and only permanent international court with jurisdiction to prosecute individuals for the international crimes of genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and the crime of aggression. The ICC is distinct from the International Court of Justice, an organ of the United Nations that hears disputes between states. Established in 2002 pursuant to the multilateral Rome Statute, the ICC is considered by its proponents to be a major step toward justice, and an innovation in international law and human rights. -- Wikipedia
